The Diocese of Elphin covers most of Co Roscommon, the east of Co Sligo, a small part of north-east Galway and a small part of Co Westmeath. It includes thirty-seven parishes.
The book opens with a short history of the diocese by the distinguished Franciscan historican Canice Mooney OFM. Local people, local historians, and those who have roots in the area, will find the short histories of each parish in the diocese, each with its own map, list of townlands and illustrations, of great interest.
Historians will find a treasure trove of source material for further study: an extensive bibliography of the diocese, short biographies of the bishops of the diocese over the centuries, bishops’ reports to Rome from the seventeenth to the eighteenth centuries, clergy lists from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, notes on the religious orders in the diocese and on the patron saints of the various parishes. It also contains the text of the 1731 Report on the State of Popery in Ireland.
