The words of the hymn ‘prayer is the Christian’s vital breath – the soul’s sincere desire’ are as true today as when James Montgomery (1771-1854) wrote them so many years ago. Many people, including some Christians, live life at such a frenetic pace that time alone with God seems to be reduced to a bare minimum, if not squeezed out altogether.
We may forget God, but he doesn’t abandon us. He is always ready to hear our prayers – in joy or in pain, in the good times and in desperate situations.
Here Jenny Child offers a collection of simple, reflective and inspiring prayers under two headings: Prayers for our Daily Pilgrimage, including Morning and Evening Prayers and less formal prayers for use throughout the day, and then Occasional Prayers which cover the main seasons of the year, major liturgical celebrations and the church in the world.
